The following day, Naomi and I sit on blue mats in the auxiliary gym, stretching for yoga. I don’t know what your high school is like, but at mine, you don’t have to take gym unless you have a serious death wish. Instead, there’s modern dance, hot yoga, Pilates Reformer, Soul Cycle, and barre. Usually we take barre because hot yoga means hanging out with a bunch of sweaty classmates and ruining your hair for the day, but I really need some Zen.
“Where were you yesterday night?” Naomi says as she strips off her hoodie to reveal a sports cami. The thermostat is about to be cranked to 100 degrees, so the less clothing, the better. “I must have texted you like fifty times with outfit options for Noel’s party. You’re still on for hair and makeup tonight, right? The party is going to be amazing.”
I lean over my shinbone. Class hasn’t started yet, but new age music plays softly over the speakers, and Pierre, the slightly pudgy but amazingly limber instructor, prowls around the front getting out blocks and ropes and other apparati for the flexibly-challenged. “Sorry, yes,” I murmur. “And as for last night, my mom got all Medieval and took away all my digital privileges. Just because I told her to go to hell.”
Naomi widens her eyes. “I can’t believe what you get away with at your house. If I said that to my mom, I’d be on the no-parties list for months.”
“Yeah, well, I’ve got her wrapped around my finger,” I say loftily, although the whole thing is a lie. I saw Naomi’s texts come in last night, every single one of them. I had been sitting on my bed, staring vacantly at the wall, biting my thumb raw, freaking out about my new world.
What was Courtney up to? After I’d shoved her in her room, I’d told my mother what happened. My mother said she’d keep an even closer watch on Courtney, instructing Courtney loudly that when she meant she couldn’t leave the property, she really meant not go outside, period. Courtney had just smiled blandly at my mom and said she was sorry and that it wouldn’t happen again. She was so…calm. In the olden days, she used to protest, defend herself, wilt with heartbreak. But now it’s like there’s this crispy shell over her, and everything’s just bouncing off. I don’t care about staying in her good graces, she’d said to me in the woods. So what did she care about?
And then there was a knock at my door. My father poked his head in. “Dinnertime.”
I told him I wasn’t hungry, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. “Just come down for a little while. For me.”
I wasn’t sure where my father sat on the Courtney fence. Since she was shipped away, he’d closed off, turned inward. Sometimes he gave me meaningful looks when we were out in the ocean waves together at the beach, and sometimes, when we watched Phillies games, he turned to me and seemed like he was almost going to say something…but he never did.
